Remember These 5 Things When Sending A Balikbayan Box
Planning to send a Christmas package to your loved ones in the Philippines this Christmas season? Here are 5 things to remember when sending a balikbayan box:
1. Send only the allowable goods
You can send canned goods, clothes, bags, and grocery items for personal consumption and use. It is important that you avoid sending goods that are strictly prohibited from entering the Philippines. These are the following goods you can’t put in your balikbayan box:
Drugs and other prohibited substances
Firearms and explosives, including toy guns
Cash of any currency, checks, and anything to do with money
Pirated items (VCDs, DVDs, VHS, CDs, tapes)
Pornographic and gambling materials
2. Stay within the US$500 limit
If the content of your box exceeds US$500, this may be subjected to additional fees. The problem with this is that your loved ones (the beneficiary of the balikbayan box) may have to pay more just to claim the items.
3. Organize all the items
Make sure you place the items into the box in an orderly manner. Otherwise, you risk your items to damages, especially since you don’t see the shippers handle your boxes. To organize the items, do secure them in a tight manner, leaving no space for the items to get broken. If you’re sending bottled items, make sure you wrap it with a cloth to avoid getting shattered.
4. Declare all items
This is for your safety and security. It is important that you mention what items are in the box and the quantity of each. Doing so would be helpful later on should items go missing. It would also be safer to declare the price for each item so that the Bureau of Customs will give the proper computation should they charge the beneficiary for taxes.
5. Monitor the delivery
Make sure to write down the name and contact details of your shipper. Also, note the tracking number they provide you. This will help you feel secure with the delivery. You can also monitor the shipment of your balikbayan box. Most shippers let you track your balikbayan box on their website. You can also track your balikbayan box by visiting Bureau of Custom’s tracking page here.
The Christmas season is the season for giving. Make sure your loved ones receive the gifts you’ve sent safely by keeping these 5 reminders in mind.
